There is always a pressure of historical facts. Google started as a search engine.
That is history now… Intrigued?
I remember the Internet before Google. What a mess! While several search engines were around (remember AltaVista, HotBot? Yahoo is still kicking), you always felt as a dumpster diver while trying to find what you needed. Smaller search engines popped up here and there; I’ve made a list at that time, which is still online, for the sake of Digital Heritage Preservation Idea. Many domain names referred there are not just offline at the moment but no longer registered! This creates an intense sense of fragility of the digital life happening on the web.
The phenomenon of Google was revolutionary in terms of structuring the unstructured and making all that digital dumpster not only useful but fundamentally required for the stage of civilization we are experiencing now.
Wait a minute… Is it still a search engine?
It pretends it is.
However, under the hood, it is much more than that.
With recent advances in AI, the underlying deep neural networks can do much more than a sophisticated and efficient ranking of web pages by relevance and presenting you the most targeted ads.
The mature GoogleMind (the term is coined!) can now – potentially – leverage all the web data and its capabilities of processing it to… become a great conversation partner!
Google, please stop thinking about yourself as a search engine! That was your childhood, and you are grown up now.
We want an extra button below your query field! We want to see, besides “Google search” and “I am feeling lucky”, the real thing – “Ask GoogleMind”!
Q: Why are you giving away all those ideas?
A: I have unlimited supply of them.
